Audit of Sitges reveal € 67 million municipal debt

An internal audit of the municipal accounts of Sitges (Garraf) presented late September, sums up the debt as per June 30, 2011, to € 67 million, of which 43 million are loans from banks. The accounts payables amount to 24 million, 2 million more than earlier estimated.

The four party coalition now ruling the town, lead by Miquel Forns (CiU), are putting in place plans to improve the finances and have started by reducing the number of politically appointed personnel in public services (càrrecs de confiança, in Catalan), a measure expected to result in savings of € 500.000 As a next step, fees for municipal services – among them waste collection – will be increased with objective to fully cover not only for direct, but also for indirect costs.
