Baix Penedès has the Highest Unemployment Rate in Catalonia

We already know that that the Penedès comarques Garraf and Anoia did very poorly in the unemployment statistics of the province of Barcelona for 2010. Now, the figures for the whole of Catalonia have been published, and it turns out that Baix Pededès (within the province of Tarragona) is the comarca which leads this sad ranking. There the unemployment rate at the end of 2010 was 25,2%, compared to the Catalan average of 18,0%.

The root problem here is the labour market legislation which is regulated from the central level and, personally, I am totally disappointed with the Spanish socialist government’s repeated lack of initiative. Spain’s current rigid system gives a good protection for a smaller and smaller group of “insiders”, while what we need to generate prosperity in society is a legislation which removes disincentives to employing the now scarily big group of “outsiders”.

Sitges is Not Bankrupt

The new local CiU-lead coalition government of Sitges (Garraf) recently decided to issue a statement that it is not bankrupt, a move motivated by speculations in media throughout Spain. True, the 65 million Euro debt which they inherited from the socialists results in an in a municipal debt rate of 103% v.s. annual revenue, but that is still within the “allowed” limits.

Personally, I am concerned that the Spanish tax system – in general very keen on transfers between different parts of the geography – does not seem able to compensate towns for services offered to tourists. Sitges, for example, has a tax base of 28.000 year-around inhabitants, but houses up to 100.000 people during the summer months.

New Waste Collection System Along the Beaches of Calafell

The old waste containers used to be an eyesore for the visitors on the beach Calafell Platja. In order to improve the image of the town, the local authorities have now replaced with portable alternatives, available from 17:00 to 03:00 on a daily basis. During the rest of the day, there will be fines for those who leave rubbish bags in the streets.

Personally, I am very fond of all measures which make Penedès a more attractive as a place to live or visit.

Castellers de Vilafranca Build the First Gamma Extra Tower 2011

During the human tower exhibition in Mataró last weekend, the Castellers de Vilafranca (Alt Penedès) became the first team of the 2011 season to complete a construction from the gamma extra. This is the name of the absolutely most difficult castells and what the “green team("els Verds") managed to build and dismantle was a tower of 9 levels, with 2 people per level (torre de 9).

Personally, I will be extremely disappointed if this team does not offer us an equally advanced construction on July 30 when they will take part in the Festa Major celebrations of Vilanova i la Geltrú. My dream? A 4de9 amb l'agulla, of course!

Anoia Opens the First Part of the New Eix Diagonal

The first 6,9 kilometers of the double lane highway Eix Diagonal have just been opened between Igualada and Castellfollit del Boix (Anoia). When fully completed it will link Vilanova i la Geltrú with Manresa.

Personally, I am confident that, once completed, this new infrastructure will have a big impact on the flows of business and tourism since it will give the inner parts of Catalonia a direct connection with the coast in Garraf, without having to pass by Barcelona.

Festa Major in Vilanova i la Geltrú 2011 - Recommendations in English on the Program

In a few days we will celebrate the Festa Major of Vilanova i la Geltrú 2011. Below you will find a summary of what I – from my originally Swedish and totally subjective perspective - would recommend. My focus is on folkculture (cultura popular) but that does not mean that I will not take part in events of other kinds.

The full official program in Catalan can be found here, but in case you want to receive personal advice, do not hesitate to comment on this post, contact me on Twitter or approach the human tower builders Bordegassos de Vilanova (in yellow shirts) and ask for “el suec” (the Swede). It is my firm opinion that the Festa Major of Vilanova i la Geltrú deserves to be discovered also by those of you who do not (yet) live here.

And, by the way: During the Festa Major, the pabordes (let us say, the organizing committee) asks everyone to dress up in white.

Friday, July 29
21:30 - a huge Catalan flag (la senyera) will be hung from the church tower in plaça Sant Antoni (on the northern side of our main church, at the top of the Rambla).
22:00 (approximately) – the correfoc (firerun) with fire spitting dragons and several teams of devils dancers (diables) will start from plaça de les Neus (on the southern side of the aforementioned church), proceed through the streets of the town centre and end in plaça de la Vila with a ceiling of fire (sostre de foc). In case you want to participate, make sure to put on old long sleeved and long legged clothes plus cover your hair. And do not be ashamed of putting in ear plugs – I will.

Saturday, July 30
11:00 – the Festa Major rowing challenge in Catalan llaguts (a boat type) on the beach Ribes Roges, in front of Estació Nàutica.
18:30 – the human tower exhibition of the Festa Major 2011. Starting with a parade down from plaça Pau Casals, followed by the actual exhibition (at approx. 19:00) in plaça de la Vila. Participants: the local team Bordegassos de Vilanova, the best team of Catalonia Castellers de Vilafranca (which have announced that they plan to build one construction from the so called gamma extra) and Colla Jove Xiquets de Tarragona.

Sunday, July 31
19:00 – the Falcons de Vilanova and their guests Meaka Dantza Taldea from Irun (Gipuzkoa) will parade through the town and then build acrobatic human towers in plaça de la Vila.

Monday, August 1
21:00Haveneres i Rom Cremat – "Songs from Havana" - performed by the group Bergantí rounded off by a glass of burnt rum – at the monument of Francesc Macià, at the bottom of Rambla de la Pau.

Tuesday, August 2
20:00 - the Festa Major Concert by the local music conservatory Mestre Montserrat, in plaça de la Vila.

Wednesday, August 3
18:00 – the smallest children of the town are invited to get rid of their pacifiers by giving them to the mulasses (giant donkeys), in plaça de la Vila.
19:00 – The three giant couples from Vilanova and la Geltrú will be paraded down (baixada dels gegants) from carrer Sant Josep, via the Rambla to plaça de la Vila, where they will all dance at the same time.
▫ After this giant performance (approximately at 20:30) the drum orchestra (batucada) Son da Rua will parade through the town.
21:00 – the Vilanova girls’ team of Ball de Bastons (Catalan stick dance) will celebrate their 25th anniversary by performing la Boja in plaça de les Cols.

Thursday, August 4
11:30 – writer Teresa Costa i Gramunt has been selected and will read the Festa Major invitation in the assembly hall of the town hall (ajuntament), in the plaça de la Vila.
12:00 – the main days of the Festa Major 2011 will start with 12 cannon ball shots being fired off in the same square, accompanied by bell ringing from all churches. After this, a there will be small performances first in this square and then throughout the town center.
18:30 – a big popular culture parade will take place in the town centre (cercavila de la Vigília), starting from plaça de les Casernes, proceeding via plaça de les Cols and plaça de les Neus, then following the Rambla and ending in plaça de la Vila, where all participating teams will make a joint performance at (approximately) 20:00.
23:00 – the Festa Major fireworks on the beach Ribes Roges.

The part not to miss is the joint performance in plaça Sant Antoni, while local dignitaries enter the church.
10:00 – the Festa Major mass in the church Sant Antoni.
11:30 – a popular culture parade (cercavila de sortida d’ofici) will follow the pabordes and local politicians back to the plaça de la Vila, where there will be small performances (including human towers), starting at 12:30.
18:00 – a show of all Catalan folk dances practised in Vilanova, in the plaça de la Vila.
21:00 – the main popular culture parade (cercavila del Vot del Poble) will start in plaça de la Vila, follow C/ Caputxins downwards and then take to the North via the Rambla and end in plaça de les Neus. Once there, the inhabitants’ vow to be faithful to our Patron Saint la Mare de Deu de les Neus (Virgin Mary) will be followed by a joint performance and (what else?) fireworks.

Saturday, August 6
19:00 – Vilanova i la Geltrú’s childrens parade, based on local legends - la cercavila de l'Imaginari – will round off the popular culture part of the Festa Major 2011.

Florenci Salesas on the Rivalry Between Sitges and Vilanova

The feeling that most strongly unites the inhabitants of Sitges with those of Vilanova i la Geltrú is that they cannot stand each other. Why is that? Let us see if Florenci Salesas – who has lived in Sitges throughout his life - can explain it.

Florenci, there seems to be a bit of rivalry between Sitges and Vilanova. Is that correct?

There’s a strong rivalry and it’s been there for a long time. I know people –well, at least a handful - who even claim to hate Vilanova. Therefore, first of all, I want to thank you for having decided to settle in our neighbour town. It is a sacrifice. I know. You must almost take on the role of an NGO. All credit to you! You're a cosmopolitan in a town which is not especially civilized...

I understand that it’s your intention to answer in a joking tone, right?

Sure, we have to treat the subject with humour. Having a sense of humour is like an intelligence test. And if there’s someone who doesn’t understand this... than I’m sure he’s from Vilanova. The legend has it that everything began in the nineteenth century when some fishermen from Vilanova suffered an accident at sea. Some claim that they sought help from a boat from Sitges which refused to come to their rescue. This obviously is completely invented slander. It has never happened.

We from Sitges, however, don’t pay much attention to the envy which people in Vilanova have for us. In general, we tend to turn our back on them, because, to find a real competitor, we know we must look towards Barcelona. We focus on conferences and other events of interest to people of today, urban culture, while you organize festivals based on rural music and traditions... Apart from that there are a few details, like the salad xató - which comes from Sitges - and the carnival – where I consider it nice that you’re trying to maintain a folkloric atmosphere, as a kind of museum, while our version has incorporated international elements which, in turn, has resulted in groups such as Batukada Markatú receiving national awards. After all, what awards can your town can expect for throwing candy in the streets?

In short, you don’t find much rivalry between two equals here. You, in Vilanova, have the industry, while we have the tourism, and that’s certainly not surprising. Your beach promenade starts in an industrial port and leads to the middle of nowhere. We, on the other hand, have our church rock overlooking the sea, like a postcard - a fantastic image composition very difficult to find, not only in Catalonia, but in the whole world. I know a woman who has small paintings of the church rock throughout the house, even in the bathroom. And I understand her. I also often take pictures of it. One day I met her husband in the street, and it was him who told me this while we were talking. However, he then added that he considered this obsession with the church rock exaggerated, as if Sitges had a San Sebastian complex. Well, soon enough he confessed that he was originally from Vilanova and then I had to forgive him. If you haven’t learnt to appreciate culture and aesthetics since you were a child, you simply cannot make a proper judgment. In these matters, we from Sitges – who have grown up being cultured - have to adapt an understanding, father-like attitude, like true aristocrats. In our town you kick a tile in the street and under it you’ll find a free concert of classical music or an exhibition by a renowned painter. True, in Vilanova you the Carpa Juanita. It's yours and I’m happy that you’re so proud of it...

Now, what should we do about this rivalry?

I think we ought to reinforce it. Look, if these tensions exist is because there is a relationship – although it might be similar to a traditional Catholic marriage where the spouses cannot stand each other but still have to spend the rest of their lives together. This kind of rivalry based on mocking the other side, serves to magnify both towns and is always good as long as you don’t believe it too much!

Personally, under no circumstances do I hate Vilanova. If a tourist stopped me in the street and asked me: "Is this the town of Carpa Juanita?" I would, of course, answer that this fascinating fish belongs to our neighbour town. I wouldn’t by any means try to appropriate such a fine symbol to ourselves. Apart from that, when I get too much of Sitges, I have the habit to escape to your town for a few hours. It helps me to realize how fortunate I am to live in Sitges. Therefore, how could I not be grateful to Vilanova?

Looking towards the future: if there are so many problems to stand one another between Sitges and Vilanova, what will happen if we create a vegueria with many more similar towns, all of them aspiring to be important?

It is true that balancing the egos of all these towns will not be easy and certainly we have to live through many useless debates à la Lilliput – like if eggs are to be broken on the larger end or the smaller end. I'm a big supporter of Barcelona as the capital of my country. However, as Gaziel used to say, from the air Catalonia looks like an insect where the head has become excessively big. The growth of Barcelona is becoming totally disproportionate. And that’s precisely why we cannot join them. We would disappear.

In Penedès, on the other hand, to compete, I think we must first admit our relative small size and then learn to manage our great assets: the coast and wine, and a history which unites us ... And if we have to choose a local capital, personally, I’d prefer... Vilafranca del Penedès.

Really? Now you are being very controversial! I imagine that your reason is that geographically Vilafranca has the most central location, right?

No, there is no rational reasoning behind that. It’s all very easy: Sitges is and will always be the cultural capital of the vegueria, but we have no intention of housing the administration. And with Vilafranca and Vilanova being the options... You certainly cannot expect me to side with your town. I'm from Sitges!

All heder åt dig!

Sales Office for Water Sports in Vilanova’s Torre Blava

Torre Blava on the beach promendade of Vilanova i la Geltrú (Garraf) will from now house the sales office for the water sport activities offered by Estació Nàutica. This will at the same time significantly improve the opening hours (10-13, 17-20) of the exhibition by artist Guinovart, in the same building.

Personally, I think that this is a great initiative. Earlier we used to have a perfectly located historic tower which – when it was closed – made people wonder what was inside and - when it was open – disappointed with the exhibition being so small. Now it will support one of the commercial activities where this town has natural strengths and if people at the same time are treated to some local art, that only makes things better.

Just per això no podem unir-nos-hi.

Problems on the Penedès Traffic Artery C-15 Throughout the Summer

This summer there are serious traffic problems on the current version of road C-15 between Vilanova i la Geltrú and Vilafranca del Penedès. The reason is the construction of a new double lane connection, expected to open early 2012 and forming part of the so called Eix Diagonal. Last year, the road works started only after the peak tourism season was over, but this year the interruptions could not be avoided.

Personally, I am more than happy to accept this temporary inconvenience, since I feel that the existing curvy road is not safe, especially not in the night.

Foul Smelling Vilanova Ditch Finally Covered

The ditch which used to cut through the area Baix a Mar of Vilanova i la Geltrú (Garraf) has finally been covered and, instead, there is now a promenade from the train station down to platja del Far plus a playground for the children.

Ditches like this one, so typical for coastal towns in Catalonia, stand dry during most of the year, but are necessary to avoid flooding during the torrential rains we often see in the autumn.

As I see it, to cover them in urban areas is anything but a luxury investment since the stagnant water in them can have a very foul smell.

Albet i Noya – Organic Wines from Penedès

Spain's first organic wines come from here, the Penedès area, or the house Albet i Noya to be more precise. It was an order from a Danish customer in the late 70's which made the owners decide to get to grips with organic agriculture, and now all of their 76 hectares are dedicated to this. The difference compared with the traditional method is that you must not to use chemical pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Sulphur dioxide is allowed, but the maximum amount which can be used in an organic wine is set to half of normal. At Albet i Noya they use even less.

The winehouse does produce a few reds, but since we are in Penedès green grapes dominate, above all the varieties xarel·lo, parellada and macabeu, all three typically used for cava. Additionally, they run experiment to try to rediscover of some of the grapes which were grown here before, in the late 19th century, the phylloxera plague temporarily knocked out the whole European wine industry.

For those who want to discover the viticulture of Penedès, I believe that a first visit to one of the internationally known brands (Torres, Cordoníu or Frexinet) is a must, but after that I warmly recommend Albet i Noya. Here you will not gaze at kilometer long wine cellars on multiple floors, but in return enjoy the intimacy of a value-based family business.

Albet i Noya offers tours in English, Catalan and Spanish. The house is located in Sant Pau d'Ordal (Subirats, Alt Penedès) and it is easy to get there by car thanks to map links in the web page in English, which you find here. Thank you Wine Experience for the recommendation.

SWE: Om hur Penedès fick ekologiskt vin tack vare Danmark

Vilanova ex-Mayor Candidates to Lead PSC

Late October this year, the Catalan socialists PSC will hold a congress which promises to be exciting, since the election of a new leader will also outline the future political platform. Joan Igansi Elena, ex-Mayor of Vilanova i la Geltrú (Garraf), is first to present his candidature. Within the party, he comes from a faction often called the obiolistes - formally organized as Nou Cicle – which maintained a critical distance to the former leader José Montilla, and which works for a more open and more catalanista profile. Joan Ignasi Elena is believed to have strong support among the municipal representatives and the youth movement of the party, but will most likely run against political heavyweights such as Miquel Iceta – with a long experience on the Catalan as well as Spanish level – and Àngel Ros – sitting Mayor of Lleida.

Personally, I hope that Joan Ignasi Elena will not burn himself out prematurely, fighting against a machine under influence from PSOE. We here in Vilanova know our former Mayor as an honest and very modest man, something which certainly cannot be said about all politicians in Catalonia or the rest of Spain.

Sitges Film Festival Opens with Movie in Catalan

For the first time ever, the October 6-16 Fantasy Film Festival of Sitges (Garraf) (Festival Internacional de Cinema Fantàstic de Sitges) will be opened with a movie whose original version is in Catalan. The film “Eva” constitutes the debut work Kike Maillo. Among other productions with a local connection, the organizers point out Mientras Duermes by Jaume Balagueró and La Mujer del Eternauta by Adán Aliaga.

Personally, I wonder if this will be the year when I make my debut as a visitor of this festival. I seem to always find excuses not to go...

Costa Daurada Campaign Against Counterfeit Goods

In cooperation with the Generalitat, the municipalities el Vendrell, Calafell and Cunit (all in Baix Penedès) will run an information campaign to discourage people from buying counterfeit goods sold illegally in the streets (top-manta). This phenomenon exists on many beaches here, but seems to be especially problematic on Costa Daurada. Last year, the decision makers of Calafell and el Vendrell decided not to fight it, since they considered that the situation was beyond control, but that initiative provoked strong protests from other towns.

Personally, I consider that society must not accept top-manta sales, since it is an unfair competition to legal business. And, unfortunately, I believe that it can only be limited through frequent and regular police interventions.
