The Penedès Agenda is a collection of events which I recommend to foreigners (expats or tourists) who want to explore Penedès or events which I consider important from a – highly subjective – international perspective. It is biased towards the comarca Garraf (Sitges and Vilanova) but also covers Alt Penedès, Baix Penedès and Anoia.

The agenda posts are up-dated whenever I learn about new things. To the greatest extent possible will I link back to official pages for information on time and locations and cannot guarantee the correctness of the data presented.

The Sant Jordi Celebrations of Vilanova i la Geltrú, 2011

Like every year, on April 23 the Catalans celebrated their patron saint Sant Jordi (Saint George) with books and roses. Here in Vilanova the rain which we had been warned about did not materialize so we could enjoy the colorful mix of commerce and culture so typical for this day. As usual, not only book and flower sellers had erected their stands in the rambla, but also NGOs and political parties.

Here you find my posts on this day from earlier years: 2007, 2008, 2009 och 2010.

My First Camp Nou Experience: Barça - Osasuna

Yesterday, FC Barcelona won over Osasuna with 2 - 0 and for the first time I watched the match at Camp Nou. I was fascinated by how well you can follow the game despite the size of the stadium and enjoyed following the spontaneous comments and cires from those club members who have permanent seats. At the same time I was disappointed that we in the audience did not help our team more - apparently culers are known not to sing very much.

As for the football, I agree with those critics who have called this Barça’s worst liga match of the year. Goalkeeper Victor Valdés was the only player who made me impressed and unfortunately he had to be a lot more active than his Osasuna counterpart. True, the speed increased when Iniesta, Messi and Xavi came onto the field, but it did not result in many goals. And on Wednesday there is yet another match against Real Madrid in top form. Yes, I’am nervous!

Human Towers for the Dragonslayer

On April 23, all of Catalonia celebrates its patron saint Sant Jordi (St. George) but already last Sunday, did we (castellers) build human towers in his honor in Vilanova i la Geltrú. We in the local team, Bordegassos de Vilanova, managed to reach al our objective: 5de7 (albeit thanks to some skillful manoeuvres, especially by children at the top), 4de7, 3de7, Vano the 5 and Pde5s.

Joves Xiquets de Valls Xiquet - one of Catalonia's best teams – demonstrated their strength with two super-stable towers of eight levels: 4de8 and 3de8.

Our other guests, Nens del Vendrell - who had a very good season in 2010 - due to the absence of some members, had to settle for 3de7 as the best construcion.

The next appearance by Bordegassos will be in Cabra del Camp (Tarragona) on May 8, yet again together with Joves Xiquet de Valls.

Vilanova i la Geltrú in the New York Times

Vilanova Grand Marina - Barcelona - a technical specialist for port superyachts of up to 260 feet - is an example to follow for this town’s future and I think it is great has been discovered by the international press.

That some supposedly progressive Vilanova citizens claim that that the luxury is an insult to the poor, is to completely ignore how private enterprise throughout history has proved superior in creating common prosperity.

Spanish Municipal Elections in Figures: 1987-2007

Everyone who is interested in the May 22 local elections in Spain should take a look at LaVanguardia’s interactive presentation of the results from 1987 to 2007. It is based on coloured maps, which clarifies and simplifies comparisons between different municipalities. For example, we see how, 2007, the Socialists dominate in the province of Barcelona, but the polls predict that we will soon have a more colorful patchwork. The Spanish Interior Ministry still, beats LaVanguardia in one aspect: here you also find the names of the elected representatives.

Spanska kommunalval i siffror: 1987-2007

Much Shorter to Get Me to Going Again

I have to renew my way of blogging. The long entries which I wrote in the beginning of the year was had the objective to prove to myself that I could write columns. But step by step I raised my own expectations on myself and suddenly I did not have enough time any longer.

Now I will simplify. Geographically, I will again focus on Vilanova i la Geltrú and it connections with Penedès and Barcelona. The style will bre micro-blogging, and I imagine two kinds of texts: comments of 70 and articles of 140 words, not always with photographs. And, unfortunately, I will have to cut back on my linguistic ambitions: English will continue to be the main language (even if it is not my mother tongue), many texts will have a version in Swedish while texts in Catalan and Spanish will be less frequent.

Let us see where this change will take us…

Ara vull simplificar.

A veure a on ens portarà aquest canvi...
