Human towers in Vendrell
Last weekend, we experienced a very nice day with human towers, castellers, in Vendrell. My team, Bordegassos de Vilanova, managed to complete 5de7, 4de7 amb agulla, 4de7 and pilar de 5 aixecat per sota, all on the first attempt.
The local team Nens del Vendrell - in the middle of their preparations for Concurs de Castells - built a very stable 4de8, their third for this season. Their big challenge of the day, to build a torre de 8, turned out to be beyond reach, while a torre de 7 was completed without any difficulty.
When the Nens made their attempt to build the torre de 8, I got up a close-up experience of the enormous pressure which base (pinya) suffers when a human tower with an additional support structure (folre) collapses on it.
However, the most impressive part was when Castellers d'Altafulla completed their 3de7 amb agulla. In casteller language you talk about a "castell ben treballat" when a team succeeds in holding together what looks bound to fall apart and, so far, I have never seen a better example of that expression than this.
I will miss the Concurs de Castells
I did not receive tickets to this year’s big human tower event, Concurs de Castells in Tarragona, October 3. Last Monday at 12:00, when 1.000 tickets were released for sales to the public, within 20 minutes some 9.000 attempts to buy them were made - enough for the made informatics system of Caixa Laietana to collapse. All frustration was immediately aired on the official Facebook page, but only in the late afternoon did the organizers find the time to comment on the events.
Now I will instead have to follow the competition from home, via TV3, Vilafranca's PTV or live streaming. It will not be the same atmosphere as I experienced two years ago, but in return, thanks to the commentators, I will learn a lot more.
Next performance
On Saturday, September 25, Bordegassos celebrates Diada d'Albert Salvany with Moixiganguers d'Igualada and Xicots de Vilafranca. The performance will take place at 18:30 in plaça de les Cols here in Vilanova i la Geltrú.
