Vilafranca del Penedès (Alt Penedès) was the first town to make public its candidacy to be the
Capital of Catalan Culture in
2015. By October 31 it should be clear which the competitors are but the initiative has already won the
support of more than 200 local cultural entities, political parties, trade unions and intellectuals.
Towns within the Catalan speaking corner of the world are selected the cultural capital of the year based on plans for how to promote the Catalan language and culture. This year the distinction was conferred upon Escaldes-Engordany (Andorra), for 2012 upon Tarragona and for 2013 Ripoll.
